New Single: Spy+Hunter

Available now on Bandcamp, and tomorrow (Saturday, Feb 21st) on streaming services, is “Spy+Hunter”, a new song from our up-coming album Shock of Heart.
The cover art for Shock of Heart, along with the singles, is home-made by yours truly. I’ve been pretty happy with them so far, but I am conscious that this one is perhaps a stretch.
It may be a good idea to say something about the lyrics of this song. I’ve been an avid listener of the podcast DEATH IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER by Michael S. Judge, and the themes in the lyrics here owe some debt to that, and perhaps the Russ Baker book Family of Secrets. The main character/narrator is something like a Poppy Bush (the way I’ve learned to see him). The second verse is specifically about the genocide in Gaza. The bridge is about when the whole world turned dusty orange here on the east coast a few years ago. Going outside meant breathing in the ash of the dead animals and plants and god knows what else from Canadian wild fires, and you couldn’t see through it down the street. Just ashy orange everywhere.
Those things are all directly connected, to me. I don’t know that I’ve done those topics proper justice here, at all, but I thought it was worth noting.
The bass and drum part that opens and themes the tune is quite older than the song itself. Mike (Horaz, drummer) and I had used it as the basis of a Bloody Your Hands song, long ago. When I first started trying to make something new over that bassline I was pretty convinced it wasn’t going to work out, but here we are and I couldn’t be happier with all the work Mike and Jameson put into it, and the amazing work Tommy Cormier did mixing this thing together and working on us with it. This is one of the songs on the record where a majority of the parts were recorded at our little rehearsal studio space, Sound Kapital, with later overdubs (and backup vocals on the chorus by Tommy!) recorded at Tommy’s home studio.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy listening to it!
Update: I nearly forgot to mention, save the date, Friday March 6th, if you’ll be in New York City, come to our release show! With our friends Deep Wimp and Castle Black. Also, I ordered t-shirts, they’re fantastic.

Took me a minute, but I remember now what the old Bloody Your Hands song was called, "Souvenirs." I can't find a recording of it on the streaming sites, unsure if it was published. Seems to pre-date the 2015 record, _Paper Cuts_. Or, it didn't make the cut? I can't recall now. We've all been at this a long time!
